Fox News, the network that has a deep relationship with misogyny, aired another gem last week. Are we surprised? No. Are we baffled? Yup.
Last week on Fox and Friends, the three hosts from the online show PolitiChicks, declared that they wanted to “redefine feminism”.
Why? What’s wrong with feminism today? Feminists, they said, have been doing it all wrong. They told Fox News host Anna Kooiman that feminists have been placing women "back into the stone ages" by wickedly sexualizing women.
But alas, these three women have come to save our souls! They’ve branded a new kind of feminism for "women who really want to be women." Gina Loudon, one of the PolitiChicks, declared their feminism one for women “who want to be what God designed them to be."
What does that even mean?
The three authors of the new book What Women Really Want, have decided that feminism today “has nothing to do with empowering women anymore.” Why, you ask? According to Murrell, another PolitiChick, “We earned the right to vote, we have equality in the workplace”.
This is interesting on two accounts. On the one hand she is correct; we women have earned the right to vote. EARNED. As in women, FEMINISTS, fought to achieve our right to vote. On the other hand, she is incorrect. Why do people keep insisting there is no pay gap? Are we just too ashamed to admit it? The average woman in North America earns approximately 77-80 cents to every man’s dollar. It’s a sad truth.
But what is most interesting about their "new brand of feminism” (which the three authors urge women to “drop the shackles of the old feminism”) is how darn similar the two are.
The authors argue women want the “freedom to choose” for themselves, their children, and their families. Women want “less government in their lives”. Women do not want their bodies politicized and they do not want to be sexualized or objectified.
Interesting, indeed. Because, who knew, feminism wants all that too!
It is baffling, this reoccurring theme of women-against-feminism-although-their-lives-are-improved-because-of-feminism. Too many females today promote and advocate feminist goals while simultaneously defaming feminism.
This notion that feminism is some horrific vehicle for crazy man-hating women to talk about their vaginas is, frankly, embarrassing. For them, not us. We’re over here trying to improve the quality of life for feminized people and they can’t seem to grasp the building blocks of a social movement before refuting it.
What people fail to understand, which is staring us so squarely in the face, is that a society that supports values but rejects the correlated movement is a society that is inherently against those adversely affected peoples. In other words, promoting feminist principles while putting down feminism is undeniable proof that we live in a patriarchal society.
Discarding feminism makes it all the more relevant.
“Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties. Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions, for safety in the streets, for child care, for social welfare, for rape crisis centers, women’s refuges, reforms in the law. If someone says, ‘Oh, I’m not a feminist’, I ask, ‘Why? What’s your problem?’” – Dale Spender
Loudon refuted feminism today because it is “politicizing our bodies, and what happens in our bedrooms”. She stated, “That’s all that the feminist movement has successfully done.” (We can just pretend that increased female secondary education rates, right to own property, and widespread availability of birth control, etc. were all achieved organically.)
But do not fear: The Politichicks are “here to battle back”, because they “know what women really want.”
Ya: good ol’ feminism.
